Art Goodrich
Tonight, we mark this milestone in our evolution by introducing the newest member of our Firefighter NetCast family- Art Goodrich. Suffice it to say that this crusty old guy has been around for quite awhile and isn’t afraid to share his opinions and his take on what’s happening in the fire service.
But, here’s what makes Art so special: Although you may not always agree with what he says, you will always be treated with the respect you deserve as a fellow firefighter. Art demonstrates to all of us the “Art” of meaningful dialogue without the trash of disrespect which we see all too often. It is a valuable lesson to us in this day and age.
He calls it “The Voice of Reason”, and truer words will never be spoken.

David LeBlanc
Art introduces himself and his guest, David LeBlanc. Dave is a Lieutenant with the Harwich (MA) Fire and Rescue Department and a well-known contributor to various website forum, discussions, and blogs. David is one of the founding members of the International Association of Crusty Old Jakes (IACOJ.com). Art did not hesitate when choosing Dave as the first guest on his premiere show as they both go back a long way and have had quite a history with each other.
After the introductions, the show starts as David talks about what the IACOJ is all about, why it came to be, and the value of being able to freely express an informed opinion with respect to anyone who may disagree or hold an opposing viewpoint.
Various callers check in to say “hey” to Art and Dave, some also members of IACOJ. They reminisce about some of the craziness they ran across in the early days of the IACOJ forums. Afterward, the discussion turns toward the efficacy of NIOSH reports as compared to other LODD reports by various agencies.
A question from the chat room prompted the most animated discussion of the show. The argument of aggressive attack vs. an ultra-safe approach rears its beautiful head. Recognition of the event presented the possibility of occupants, the tenability of the building, the availability of resources and staffing issues are all variables that should direct the attack. Here, once again, the value of Art’s show is demonstrated as competing viewpoints are argued in an adult manner.
Art brings up the concept of “defensive search”, and all comment on what it is, and how and when it should be used. Again, a variety of opinions are offered.
Make sure to check out this ground-breaking premier of Art Goodrich’s “The Voice of Reason” and add it to your must-hear playlist of firefighting podcasts brought to you by our family here at Firefighter NetCast!
The next episode of “The Voice of Reason” will be on Thursday night, June 24, 2010 at 9:00pm ET.
